Soaring into the sky at a record height of over 415 meters, the Twin Towers project started to break ground in the year 1966. It took another several years before the towers were erected. Faced with building to an unprecedented height, architect Minoru Yamasaki and engineers John Skilling and Les Robertson employed rigid "hollow tubes" of closely spaced steel columns with floor trusses extended across to a central core. The columns, finished with a silver-coloured aluminium alloy, were set only 22" apart, making the towers appear from afar to have no windows at all.
Standing at the lower tip of Manhattan Island facing the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers were an architectural marvel symbolizing the prosperity of free trading and the enormous success of capitalistic economy core values. The Twin Towers, like two sharp swords cutting into the sky, became America's symbol of wealth superiority.
