The Chinese are hardened commuters and ride bicycles out of necessity. It also seems that Chinese people HATE their bikes. They spend as little as possible when buying one. They kick them. Let them fall on the ground. Never repair them. Allow them to rust into oblivion and then throw them away when they are of no more use. It is like they are just using their bikes for a quick ride until something sexier comes along. This divergence in mentality has sometimes reared a frustrating struggle for this itinerant Canuck, and I fear that my attempts at bringing my set of commuting values to what I thought was a round hole has left me sticking out like a square peg.
